A Dog mum’s journey: Celebrating 20 years of being a dog mum

Embarking on the adventure of dog motherhood 20 years ago when I moved to Australia has been a whirlwind of wagging tails, cherished moments, and invaluable life lessons. As I reflect on this journey, I’m reminded of the profound impact my furry companions have had on my life and the joy they’ve brought into every day.

Morning Rituals: Morning has always been my favourite time of the day. I love to get up when everyone is still asleep and spend time with the dogs. Its an unwritten rule that we hang out together before I do anything else. I greet the day with a cup of tea in hand and give my eagerly awaiting, salivating pups their treat-filled Kongs to lick. This simple ritual, shared in the quiet moments of planning ahead, serves as a heartwarming reminder of the bond we share but really just shuts them up until its time for the rest of the world to get up.

Challenges and Growth: One of the challenges I’ve encountered as a devoted dog mom is finding time for dedicated training sessions amidst life’s hustle and bustle. Through flexibility and creativity however, I’ve discovered that every moment becomes an opportunity for training. Its the best displacement activity ever, and helps to prevent me from doing any other chores around the house. I have also learnt that almost any house hold item can be used as an enrichment toy and developed my tendancy towards becoming an out of control hoarder.

Community Connections: One of the greatest joys of being a dog mom is the vibrant community of fellow enthusiasts I’ve had the pleasure of connecting with. From training classes to dog-related events, these shared experiences have cultivated deep friendships and provided unwavering support, reminding me that I’m never alone on this journey. We regularly meet up for walks and doggy playdates, and it gives me an excuse to spend more time with canine companionship.

Life Lessons and Relationships: Being a dog mum has taught me invaluable lessons about life and love. It has illuminated the importance of compatibility and shared values in relationships, reaffirming that any potential partner must embrace and appreciate the integral role that dogs play in my life… that’s right, I’ve discovered some people don’t like dogs. We won’t mention them ever again.

Top Tip for Dog Moms: If there’s one piece of advice I could offer to fellow dog moms, it would be to prioritize time for training. Not only does it strengthen the bond between you and your furry companion, but it also introduces you to a community of kindred spirits who share your passion for canine companionship. The only downside, it can be addictive.

As I continue to cherish each moment with my beloved furry friends, I would like to offer you a prize this mothers day.
