Why I’ll Snub Your Dog Before I Photograph Them

As a photographer, one of my greatest joys is capturing the beautiful bond between people and their dogs. Whether your pup is shy, excitable, or reserved, I take intentional steps to ensure they feel comfortable and safe during our session. You might notice that when I first meet your dog, I won’t immediately dive into a flurry of greetings or affection. This doesn’t mean I don’t love dogs (trust me, I do!), it’s actually the opposite—my approach is all about showing respect and creating a calm environment where your dog can feel confident and ready to shine in front of the camera.

Why I Approach Dogs This Way

Dogs, like people, have their own unique personalities and boundaries. Some dogs enjoy instant attention and playfulness, while others take their time to warm up to a new person. My approach honours those boundaries, allowing your dog to initiate the interaction on their terms.

During photo sessions, it’s my priority to ensure your dog is at ease. Greeting a dog in a non-intimidating way sets the tone for the session and helps them relax, which is key for capturing authentic, happy moments.

You might notice that when I arrive, I won’t make direct eye contact with your dog or rush to pet them…basically I will ignore them.

Why Ignoring Your Dog Is Actually Loving Them

If you see me acting seemingly uninterested in your pup when we meet, I promise it’s not because I don’t adore dogs! Instead, this is part of a strategy to make sure your dog doesn’t feel overwhelmed. Many dogs find it intimidating when strangers immediately try to pet them or make exuberant movements around them. By offering space, I’m showing your dog that I respect their comfort level.

Instead of initiating contact, I let your dog decide if—and when—they want to approach me. Dogs are incredibly intuitive creatures, and when given a choice, they’re much more likely to feel curious and safe. Once they approach me willingly, the interaction becomes more genuine and builds trust for the rest of our photo session.

How I Handle Greetings

Here’s what you can expect when I meet your dog for the first time:

  1. Calm and Low-Key Appearance: I’ll approach your dog mindfully, avoiding sudden movements or loud sounds. My energy will remain calm, as dogs are quick to pick up on our emotional state.
  2. No Direct Contact or Eye Contact: Initially, I won’t reach toward your dog or lock eyes with them. Staring directly at a dog can feel like a challenge to them, and reaching toward them too quickly can come across as intrusive. Instead, I’ll let them sniff around, observe me, and get used to my presence.
  3. Hands Kept Low and Relaxed: If your dog does decide to approach, I’ll let them sniff me first before offering gentle and slow affection, if they seem comfortable. Many dogs prefer pets under the chin or along the chest rather than directly on top of the head.

Creating an Environment Where They Thrive

During our session, I’ll remain mindful of your dog’s body language to adjust my approach as needed. If they appear nervous or unsure, I’ll give them space and time to acclimatize. The goal is to make sure your pet feels relaxed and happy, allowing their unique personality to shine through in every photo.

Ultimately, I want your dog to feel like my presence is just part of the background—no stress, no pressure, just a friendly addition to their day.

A Bond Built on Trust

My intentional approach to greeting dogs stems from understanding how they perceive the world around them. I know how important your dog is to you, and by showing them respect and letting them guide our interaction, I’m able to build trust while preserving their boundaries.

So, if you see me ignoring your pup when we first meet, know it’s not because I don’t adore them—it’s because I love them enough to give them the space they deserve. Together, we’ll create a safe and joyful environment that lets your dog’s personality shine for the perfect photos!

Ready to book a session? Whether you have a curious puppy, a serene senior dog, or anything in between, I’d love to capture the moments that make your bond truly special. Let’s create beautiful images filled with trust, joy, and wagging tails!
